US expanded PS imports from Bahamas, Korea down sharply
HOUSTON, January 3, 2017 (PCW) – US imports of expanded PS, or EPS foam, totaled 160,824 metric tons through October, down 11,223 mt or 6.5% from Jan-Oct 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
EPS imports for full-year 2015 totaled 202,087 mt valued at $351.3 million.
The drop through the first ten months of 2016 was mainly the result of lower imports from the Bahamas and South Korea.
Imports from the Bahamas, the third largest source, were 29,501 mt through October, down 11,750 mt or 28.5% from the 2015 period; imports from South Korea, the fourth largest source, were 17,478 mt, down 4,919 mt or 22%.
Imports from Canada, the top source, were 52,731 mt in Jan-Oct 2016, up 4,556 mt or 9.5%; imports from Mexico, the second largest source, were 49,729 mt, up 6,359 mt or 14.6%.
EPS is used to make plastic utensils and plates, molded sheets for insulation, packaging “peanuts” and blocks and in other applications. – Xavier A. Cronin
