Dow’s Plaquemine LA-3 olefins unit up and running, on-spec
HOUSTON, January 9, 2017 (PCW) – Dow’s 2.35 billion lbs/yr Plaquemine LA-3 olefins unit has been confirmed to have returned to service and is on spec.
The unit, along with the LA-2 olefins plant, went down on Dec 2 due to a site-wide power outage. LA-2 restarted Dec 13. LA-3 was reportedly restarted in late Dec but had intermittent production and spec issues.
The LA-3 olefins unit had recently restarted after a planned turnaround and expansion, which began in September. Its initial capacity was 1.75 billion lbs/yr and was expanded by another 600 million lbs/yr to 2.35 billion lbs/yr.
The unit represents 3.68% of US Gulf Coast ethylene production capacity. Its prior feedstock consumption was about 30,000 b/d of ethane, 15,000 b/d of propane and 5,000 b/d of normal butane. The new capacity adds another 10,000 b/d of ethane demand to the unit.
As of Dec 19, this outage led to a production loss of 116 million pounds of ethylene. --Samantha Hartke
