PET scrap imports through Nov valued at $60.1 million, up 18%
HOUSTON, January 10, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET scrap totaled 110,771 metric tons through November, up 16,771 mt or 18% from Jan-Nov 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
The increase is the result of rising imports this year from several countries, including Nigeria, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Japan and Austria.
Mexico and Canada remain the numbers one and two sources of US PET scrap imports, respectively, and together comprise 45% of the total. Imports from Mexico through November totaled 27,595 mt, down 1,207 mt or 4% from Jan-Nov 2015; imports from Canada totaled 22,719 mt, down 1,719 mt or 7%.
Austria has emerged this year as a new source of PET scrap imports; none were recorded in 2015 and 1,172 mt were imported through November 2016.
Imports through November are already higher than full-year 2015, during which imports totaled 101,859 mt valued at $55.5 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
