Shell receives final local OK for Pennsylvania cracker, can begin construction

HOUSTON, January 19, 2017 (PCW) – Board supervisors of Potter Township in Pennsylvania late Wednesday voted unanimously to award Shell a conditional use permit to build its ethane cracker.

The vote is the final approval needed by Shell in order to commence construction on the 3.3 billion lbs/yr cracker in the area. The facility will also include three polyethylene units (HDPE and LLDPE) with a combined capacity of 3.5 billion lbs/yr. The complex is expected to be operational in 2021.

The cracker will be the first to be built outside the US Gulf Coast in about 20 years. It has an estimated ethane demand consumption capacity of between 80,000-90,000 b/d of ethane. -- Samantha Hartke
