DuPont’s Orange olefins unit down after electrical outage

HOUSTON, January 27, 2017 (PCW) – DuPont’s 1.5 billion lbs/yr Orange olefins unit went down late Thursday after a site-wide electrical outage, according to a community hotline message.

“All units are working through their controlled start up procedures at this time. There may be visible flaring or audible alarms throughout the next several days,” the message stated.

The unit constitutes 2.32% of total US ethylene production capacity; it can consume 40,000 b/d of ethane.

The plant was last offline last March. According to company executives in an earnings call this week, a planned “mini-turnaround” at the plant was planned for 2Q. -- Samantha Hartke
