Plastic scrap exports up in August, led by China and Hong Kong trade
HOUSTON, October 6, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of plastic scrap, valued at $816.4 million in 2015, totaled 170,824 metric tons in August, up 8% or by 12,902 mt from August 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
The increase was mainly a result of a rise in exports to China and Hong Kong, which together accounted for 74% of the August 2016 total. This countered a 52% drop in exports to Canada, the third largest destination by volume, at 10,562 mt in August.
Total exports were higher in the PE, PS, PVC and PET scrap categories, but down 10% in the "other" category, which represents unsorted plastic scrap.
Exports to Vietnam, the fourth largest destination, totaled 6,618 mt in August, up 48% or by 2,142 mt from August 2015. -- Xavier A. Cronin
