Dow bringing expanded LA-3 cracker back in mid-November; TX-8 on track for mid-2017

HOUSTON, October 27, 2016 (PCW) – Dow Chemical on Thursday said it plans to return its expanded LA-3 cracker in Plaquemine to service in mid-November.

The cracker will have added 600 million lbs/yr to its ethylene production capacity, bringing the new nameplate capacity to 2.35 billion lbs/yr.

Additionally, its new TX-8 cracker in Freeport is 85% mechanically complete and remains on trach for a mid-2017 start-up. Its capacity will be 3.3 billion lbs/yr.

Dow reported 3Q net income of $719 million, down about 44% from the $1.29 billion seen in the year-ago period, largely on tighter margins and currency headwinds.

The Performance Materials & Chemicals reported 3Q sales of $2.4 billion, down from $3.1 billion in the year-ago period, reflecting the impact of the split-off of Dow Chlorine Products and pricing declines in all businesses. Volume was down 16%, reflecting the impact of the Dow Chlorine Products transaction.

Meanwhile, the Performance Plastics group reported 3Q sales of $4.70 billion, up from $4.67 billion in the year-ago period, as volume gains in all businesses more than offset price declines in all businesses. The segment reported volume growth of 10%. -- Samantha Hartke
