US PET resin imports through Aug steady from 2016, up 19% from Mexico
HOUSTON, October 5, 2017 (PCW) – US imports of PET resin totaled 454,932 metric tons in Jan-Aug 2017, down 1,675 mt or 0.4% from Jan-Aug 2016, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
This PET is identified as having an IV of 78 ml/gram of higher; it was changed to this specification from 0.70-0.88 dl/gram on Jan 1, 2017.
Imports from five countries that are the subject of an anti-dumping petition filed on Sep 26 – Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Pakistan and Taiwan – totaled 184,737 mt or 41% of the Jan-Aug 2017 total. A decision on whether preliminary duties will be imposed on imports from any of these countries is expected on Oct 17.
The top source of US PET imports this year through August was Mexico at 189,703 mt, or 42% of the total, up 30,224 mt or 19% from Jan-Aug 2016. The South Asian country of Bhutan has emerged this year as a new source of US PET imports, at 200 mt in Jan-Aug 2017 compared to none in the 2016 months. – Xavier A. Cronin
