LyondellBasell restarting La Porte olefins unit
HOUSTON, October 27, 2017 (PCW) –- LyondellBasell is restarting its 2.69 billion lbs/yr La Porte olefins unit, which was shut down during Hurricane Harvey. Restart processes have already begun.
The unit can consume 60,000 b/d of ethane, 10,000 b/d of propane and 10,000 of normal butane, according to PetroChem Wire estimates.
CEO Bob Patel in an earnings call Friday said ethylene was being produced at the unit as of Friday morning and full operating rates are expected to be achieved over the next few days. Other units that were shuttered during the storm, shut as the Corpus Christi olefins facility, had resumed normal operations by the end of September, Patel said.
Patel added the company is still investigating opportunities along the propylene supply chain. A final investment decision on new US PDH and polypropylene units is expected at the end of next year, he added.
LyondellBasell on Friday reported 3Q net income of $1.82 billion, up from the $1.606 billion seen in the year-ago. The uptick was attributed to a 30% increase in EBITDA from the Intermediates and Derivatives segment and strong results from the Olefins and Polyolefins (Europe, Asia and International) segment. -- Samantha Hartke
