LYB’s Corpus Christi cracker being commissioned, up at expanded rate this month

HOUSTON, November 1, 2016 (PCW) – LyondellBasell on Tuesday said it is currently commissioning its Corpus Christi cracker and expects it to be operating at its expanded rate of 2.5 billion lbs/yr this month.

The cracker went down for planned maintenance and expansion work in mid-April. It had been expected to return to service in October.

The unit, prior to its 800 million lbs/yr, could consume about 25,000 b/d of ethane, 10,000 b/d of propane, 5,000 b/d of normal butane and 10,000 b/d of natural gasoline. The expanded capacity is expected to add 22,000-24,000 b/d of ethane demand, according to PetroChem Wire estimates.

In an earnings call with analysts on Tuesday, LyondellBasell noted its 3Q olefins operating rates in the US came in around 70%.

Its 1.21 billion lbs/yr ethylene unit at Morris, Illinois, was shut for 70 days during the quarter for scheduled maintenance. It restarted at the end of September. -- Samantha Hartke
