October ethylene contract settles with decrease
HOUSTON, November 1, 2016 (PCW) – Parties settling monthly contracts have been confirmed to have reached an October ethylene contract price of 35.5 cpp, down 0.25 cpp from September.
October spot ethylene last traded at 26.875 cpp on Monday and traded in a range of 26-36 cpp for the month. The 30-day October ethylene calendar average was 30.845 cpp, down 6.619 cpp from September. The 30-day weighted average came in at 32.06 cpp (down 6.638 cpp from September) for Texas and 32.005 cpp (down 6.656 cpp) for Texas-Louisiana combined. The 45-day ethylene weighted average was 34.616 cpp (basis Texas only), down 3.749 cpp from September.
In terms of cash costs, ethane-based costs in the Gulf region in October averaged 10.998 cppm up from 9.192 cpp in September. Propane basis costs in October averaged 10.876 cpp, up from 5.658 cpp in September.
The decrease in the contract price comes amid weaker spot prices even as several ethylene plants remained down for planned outages. The Gulf Coast cracker operating rate in October was 92.3%, compared with 93.8% for the year-to-date. Some 399 million pounds of ethylene output was lost in October, according to PetroChem Wire estimates. -- Samantha Hartke
