LyondellBasell restarting Corpus Christi olefins unit
HOUSTON, November 7, 2016 (PCW) – LyondellBasell is restarting its Corpus Christi olefins plant through December 7, according to a TCEQ filing.
The cracker went down for planned maintenance and expansion work in mid-April. It had been expected to return to service in October. In an earnings call with analysts last week, LyondellBasell executives said the plant was undergoing commissioning and was expected to be operating at its expanded rate of 2.5 billion lbs/yr this month.
PetroChem Wire estimates about 936 million lbs of ethylene production has been lost during the plant’s outage; it constituted about 2.69% of US ethylene capacity.
The unit, prior to its 800 million lbs/yr expansion, could consume about 25,000 b/d of ethane, 10,000 b/d of propane, 5,000 b/d of normal butane and 10,000 b/d of natural gasoline. The expanded capacity is expected to add 22,000-24,000 b/d of ethane demand, according to PetroChem Wire estimates.
