Westlake to take Calvert City ethylene unit down for 3-week turnaround, expansion in 1Q
HOUSTON, November 8, 2016 (PCW) – Westlake Chemical on Tuesday said it would take its 450 million lbs/yr Calvert City ethylene plant in Kentucky down for planned turnaround and expansion for three weeks in the first quarter.
The plant’s capacity would be expanded by 70 million lbs/yr, or 15.6%. It currently consumes about 20,000 b/d of ethane and post-expansion, is expected to consume an additional 3,100 b/d of ethane.
The Calvert City complex had a complete shutdown on June 1 due to a mechanical failure. All production was shuttered including that of ethylene, EDC, VCM, chlor-alkali and PVC resin. The ethylene unit was restarted in late July.
Westlake executives, in an earnings call with analysts on Tuesday, added the early engineering work for the expansion was already underway.
On the operations front, the company’s upcoming turnaround at its 2 billion lbs/yr PVC plant in Lake Charles is expected to impact 4Q earnings by $30 million.
Finally, the company said it would also conduct a major turnaround at its 900 million lbs/yr chlor-alkali plant at Plaquemine, Louisiana, for 24 days in the first quarter. -- Samantha Hartke
