Equistar restarting expanded Corpus Christi olefins unit

HOUSTON, November 28, 2016 (PCW) – Equistar is restarting its expanded Corpus Christi olefins plant with its new production capacity of 2.5 billion lbs/yr.

The 800 million lbs/yr expansion and turnaround began in mid-April. The unit had been expected to return to service in October.

PetroChem Wire estimates about 1.034 billion lbs of ethylene production has been lost during the plant’s outage; it constitutes about 2.69% of US ethylene capacity.

The unit, prior to its expansion, could consume about 25,000 b/d of ethane, 10,000 b/d of propane, 5,000 b/d of normal butane and 10,000 b/d of natural gasoline. The expanded capacity is expected to add 22,000-24,000 b/d of ethane demand, according to PetroChem Wire estimates. -- Samantha Hartke
