Shell begins construction of Pennsylvania cracker, PE units
HOUSTON, November 8, 2017 (PCW) – Shell Chemical Appalachia announced today it has entered the main construction phase of its petrochemicals complex in Potter Township, PA.
The site will include a world-scale ethane cracker and three PE units (total capacity: 1.6 million mt/year), to be supplied with ethane from shale gas producers in the Marcellus and Utica basins.
The company is also building a 250-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant on site, which will produce electricity and steam for the facility as well as supplying a third of its power to the local electrical grid.
The project is expected to involve 6000 construction workers, and the site will host 600 permanent employees when production begins early next decade. -- David Barry
