September US PET imports from Brazil up sharply from 2016
HOUSTON, November 10, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET resin from Brazil totaled 7,436 metric tons in Sep, up by 5,852 mt or 369% from Sep 2016, the latest US Commerce Department data show. Brazil was the second top source of PET imports in Sep. Imports from Mexico, the top source, totaled 11,098 mt, down 7,531 mt or 40% from Sep 2016.
PET imports (including rPET pellet) from Brazil, Taiwan, Pakistan, South Korea and Indonesia are the subject of a US government anti-dumping investigation. A preliminary decision in the probe is expected on March 5, 2018. This is the earliest date that duties--in the form of cash deposits required for imports to be cleared--could be imposed.
The five countries collectively accounted for 23,663 mt of US PET imports in Sep 2017, or 55% of the total. -- Xavier A. Cronin
