Petchems stocks rally as crude bounces back: PCW index
HOUSTON, December 24, 2015 (PCW) -– Petchems companies’ stocks reversed course as crude saw a strong rally toward the end of the week on bullish inventory data.
Other economic indicators lent some support, finishing Thursday slightly higher on the week.
The midstream sector saw the week’s biggest rise as its average stock price rose $2.81, or 14.47%, to $22.25/share. The move was largely boosted by Oneok’s 22.31% increase to $24.29/share as the company released its 2016 guidance during the week, showing continued volume growth in natural gas and natural gas liquids. Several analysts also determined the Tulsa-based midstream to be a buy after its guidance release.
The vinyls sector was next with its average stock price up $1.47, or 4.24%, to $35.95/share. Axiall led the pack with a stock price increase of 10.81% during the week. The company with its joint-venture Lotte Chemical announced late last week they were going to build a 1 million mt/yr (2.2 billion lb/yr) ethane cracker in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Meanwhile, the olefins/polyolefins sector climbed $2.27, or 3.87%, to $60.87/share on average. The group was led by Shell, whose stock saw week-on-week gains of 8.07%. The supermajor announced it was trimming its capital budget by $2 billion ahead of closing its acquisition of BG.
Finally, the aromatics/refinery sector saw slim gains of $0.33, or 0.51%, to $65.29/share on average. ExxonMobil’s 8.55% decrease in its stock price during the week stemmed larger gains by the group. Analysts said this week a large outflow of money from the oil major’s stock was seen, with several downgrading the company. – Samantha Hartke
