Equistar continues restart at Corpus Christi olefins plant
HOUSTON, December 13, 2016 (PCW) – Equistar has resumed the startup of its expanded Corpus Christi olefins plant, according to a TCEQ filing.
Start-up activities will continue through Saturday, the filing stated.
The 800 million lbs/yr expansion and turnaround began in mid-April. The unit had been expected to return to service in October.
PetroChem Wire estimates about 1.113 billion lbs of ethylene production has been lost during the plant’s outage; it constitutes about 2.69% of US ethylene capacity.
The unit, prior to its expansion, could consume about 25,000 b/d of ethane, 10,000 b/d of propane, 5,000 b/d of normal butane and 10,000 b/d of natural gasoline. The expanded capacity is expected to add 22,000-24,000 b/d of ethane demand, according to PetroChem Wire estimates.
