US PE export tonnage rises 11% in Oct, led by HAO LLDPE
HOUSTON, December 5, 2017 (PCW) -- October US PE shipments rose 11% from the previous month to 358,843 mt, but remained below the year-to-date average of 404,109 mt, according to data released today by the Commerce Department.
Mexico, the largest export market, was down 3% from the prior month due to lower HDPE and LDPE volumes, consistent with Braskem-Idesa chipping away at US producers' market share in the country.
Exports to Canada, the second largest market in October, were up 28% (15,493 mt) from the prior month as NOVA Chemical carried out major turnarounds at its facilities in Alberta and Ontario.
October export volumes of LLDPE hexene and octene, so-called higher alpha olefin (HAO) LLDPE, were 40% above the prior month and the year-to-date average, reaching 104,048 mt.
New mLLDPE units were being brought online by ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical and Chevron Phillips, and much of the new capacity will be exported.
Brazil was the largest destination for HAO LLDPE grades in October at 16,293 mt, followed by Belgium (13,513 mt), China (10,012 mt), Singapore (9,693 mt) and Colombia (8,115 mt). -- David Barry
