US 2015 PET imports surged from Brazil, South Korea, Russia
HOUSTON, February 8, 2016 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging-grade PET surged in 2015 from Brazil, South Korea and Russia, while they plummeted from China, the latest data from USA Trade Online show.
Total packaging-grade US PET imports, which compete with bottle-grade PET produced in the US, were up 1% last year over 2014 at 593,424 metric tons. But imports from China, the third largest source of these imports in 2014, were down 70% in 2015 at 33,857 MT.
Preliminary antidumping duties were imposed last October on US PET imports from China, India, Oman and Canada. Countervailing duties on imports whose production and/or marketing of were subsidized by the country's government were imposed earlier in the year on PET imports from China and India.
Brazil's 2015 PET imports totaled 5,749 MT, up from just 1.1 MT in 2014; South Korea's were 9,506 MT in 2015 and 2,187 MT in 2014; Russia's PET imports last year were 5,819 MT, up from 861 MT in 2014.
Peru also showed an increase, with US PET imports last year at 10,486 MT, up from 7,116 MT in 2014. India's 2015 imports were 20,835 MT, down from 38,920 MT in 2014. -- Xavier A. Cronin
