US PET imports up 15% in 2016, valued at $686.3 million
HOUSTON, February 7, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging grade PET in 2016 totaled 683,876 metric tons, up 90,558 mt or 15% from 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
Imports came from 32 countries.
The top source of imports was Mexico at 247,109 mt in 2016, up 31% from 2015. Taiwan was the number two source at 114,83 mt, up 91%, followed by Canada at 83,863 mt, down 37%, and Brazil at 58,397 mt, up 271%.
New import sources in 2016 were Saudi Arabia (502 mt), Morocco (3,202 mt) and Sierra Leone (1 kg).
Imports from China plunged to 51 mt last year from 33,857 mt in 2015, the result of anti-dumping duties imposed on these imports. India was also hit with anti-dumping duties; imports fell to 671 mt in 2016 from 20,835 mt in 2015.
