PET scrap exports down 8.2% in 2016; less to China, surge to India

HOUSTON, February 8, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap in 2016 totaled 252,424 metric tons valued at $87.4 million, down 22,540 mt, or 8.2%, from 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Exports to China, the top destination, totaled 115,532 mt in 2016, down 27,571 mt, or 19%. The main reason for this was more internal recycling of PET in China.

Exports went to 53 countries.

Exports to Taiwan also fell, totaling 5,962 mt in 2016, down 49%.

Exports to India in 2016 were 3,695 mt, up from 807 mt in 2015 or by 358%. Exports to Vietnam totaled 9,000 mt in 2016, up 47%; to Turkey they totaled 2,880mt, up 119% from 2015; and to Hong Kong, the second top destination, they totaled 100,000 mt in 2016, up 3%. -- Xavier A. Cronin
