PE scrap exports down 3% in 2016; down 60% to Canada

HOUSTON, February 9, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PE scrap in 2016 totaled 714,201 metric tons valued at $733.7 million, down 24,015 mt, or 3%, from 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

PE scrap exports in 2016 went to 45 countries. It is one of five plastic scrap categories tracked for exports and imports by USA Trade Online, a unit of the US Census Bureau. It is the largest segment by volume of plastic scrap exports, with unsorted plastic scrap second, followed by PET, PVS and PS.

Collectively, all US plastic scrap exports in 2016 totaled 1,994,271 mt valued at $733.7 million, down 109,819 mt, or 5.4%, from 2015; exports in 2015 were valued at $816.3 million.

On PE, exports last year to Canada totaled 44,976 mt, down 68,551 mt or 60% from 2015. China and Hong Kong accounted for 72.4% of al PE scrap exports in 2016, and exports to both were up from 2015: China's totaled 348,841 mt in 2016, up 13%, with exports to Hong Kong at 168,043 mt, up 1.6% from 2015.

Exports to Singapore surged to 1,861 mt in 2016 from 103 mt in 2015. Nepal saw exports in 2016 of 18 mt, up from zero in 2015, while exports to Macau fell to zero from 4 mt in 2015.-- Xavier A Cronin
