US PET Scrap Imports up 15% in 2016, valued at $63.5 mil
HOUSTON, February 24, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET scrap in 2016 totaled 117,162 metric tons, up 15,303 mt, or 15%, from 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show. Imports from the two top sources, Mexico and Canada, respectively, were down while they surged from Honduras, Nigeria and Brazil.
Imports from Mexico last year totaled 29,648 mt, down 1,418, or 4.5%; from Canada they were 23,980 mt, down 2,568 mt, or 9.7%, from 2015. Imports from Honduras, the third largest source, totaled 11,572 mt in 2016, up 6,482 mt, or 127%; imports from Nigeria last year were 4,171 mt, up from just 261 mt in 2015; and from Brazil they surged to 2,005 mt in 2016 from just 55 mt in 2015.
PET scrap imports from France in 2016 totaled 94 mt, up from none in 2015. All imports in 2016 were valued at $63.5 million. – Xavier A. Cronin
