Sasol says Lake Charles project on track; HDPE unit with Ineos complete by mid-year
HOUSTON, February 27, 2017 (PCW) – Sasol on Monday reported its Lake Charles Chemical project is 64% complete and the first units are on track for start-up in the second half of 2018.
Last year, Sasol said the 1 billion lbs/yr LLDPE plant would come online first in the second half of 2018, followed by the 1.5 million mt/yr (3.3 billion lbs/yr) ethane cracker and ethylene oxide/monoethylene glycol units. The 924 million lbs/yr LDPE unit would go into service shortly after that.
Meanwhile, the company’s joint-venture HDPE unit with Ineos at La Porte is more than 90% complete and will be mechanically complete by mid-year, Sasol said. The plant’s capacity is about 1 billion lbs/yr (470,000 mt/yr).
“We continue to work with the operator (our joint venture partner) to manage construction delays that have mainly resulted from adverse weather conditions and poor craft labor productivity,” Sasol said.
Sasol on Monday reported its six-month earnings attributable to shareholders increased 19% to Rand 8.7 billion ($669 million) from Rand 7.3 billion ($562 million) in the prior period. -- Samantha Hartke
