New Oxy/Mexichem ethylene plant starts up
HOUSTON, February 27, 2017 (PCW) – OxyChem and Mexichem on Monday announced their joint-venture 1.2 billion lbs/yr ethylene plant in Ingleside has begun operations and is currently in a “production stabilization phase.”
Start-up began late last week and operating rates have been steadily rising over the weekend. The plant is now on spec.
The cracker will be operated by OxyChem. The ethylene produced will be used by Oxy to manufacture vinyl chloride monomer, which Mexichem in turn will use to produce PVC. The companies have a 20-year supply agreement.
The plant also has an associated pipeline and storage facility at Markham. The project came in on budget, which was about $1.5 billion. Construction began in 2Q 2014.
The plant can consume about 33,000 b/d, according to PetroChem Wire estimates. -- Samantha Hartke
