US Nov PET imports surge from Korea, Pakistan while Mexico slumps
HOUSTON, January 5, 2018 (PCW) -- US PET imports from South Korea in November 2017 totaled 12,710 mt, up by 11,114 mt or 696% from Nov 2016, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
Imports from Pakistan totaled 7,889 mt in Nov 2017, up by 5,444 or 223%. The top source of imports in Nov 2017 was Taiwan at 20,370 mt, up by 6,035 mt or 42% from Nov 2016.
PET imports from South Korea, Pakistan, Taiwan, Indonesia and Brazil are expected to be hit with anti-dumping duties on Mar 5.
At the same time, imports from Mexico, the top source in 2016, totaled 3,176 mt in Nov 2017, down by 22,378 mt or 88% from Nov 2016. This was understood to be the result of a production stoppage at the Altamira PET plant in Mexico that began in Oct 2017. The stoppage occurred after bankruptcy filings by the plant's owner/operator M&G Chemicals. -- Xavier A Cronin
