Ship carrying US ethane runs aground in Suez Canal
HOUSTON, January 19, 2018 (PCW) – The Ethane Opal, en route to India and laden down with as much as 820,000 barrels of ethane, ran aground in the Suez Canal this week.
The ship collided with two ferries and into a passenger dock in the Ismalia area of the canal and is currently anchored off Port Said, awaiting repairs. No time frame for a return to service was available.
The vessel was built earlier this year and is one of six built by Mitsui OSK Lines and chartered by Reliance Industries to move ethane from the US, out of Enterprise Products Partners’ Morgan’s Point terminal, to Reliance’s petrochemical facilities in India.
The Ethane Opal constitutes 10.3% of the total ethane-dedicated global fleet capacity.
PetroChem Wire monitors ethane vessel movements on a weekly basis in its NGLs Week report. For more information about the report or for a free trial, click HERE.
