Corpus Christi channel deepening project to start as early as May
HOUSTON, February 6, 2018 (PCW) -- A $350-million project to deepen the Corpus Christi shipping channel to allow tankers to load crude oil could start as early as May, a source with the Galveston District of the US Army Corps of Engineers told PCW on Monday.
The Corps expects to release a call for bids from contractors in March for the project's first stage -- the deepening of the channel opening. Subsequent stages of the project would deepen and widen the channel and create barge lanes.
The Corps is working with Port Corpus Christi on the project. The Port completed construction of a new oil dock last year as part of the Project Jumbo PET plant in Corpus Christi. Work on Jumbo was suspended in Oct 2017 after its owner, M&G Polymers, filed for bankruptcy protection. -- Xavier A Cronin
