PET imports up 29% in Jan-Apr; surge from Russia, Turkey, Malaysia
HOUSTON, June 6, 2018 (PCW) -- US imports of PET resin were up by 67,985 metric tons or 29% in Jan-Apr from Jan-Apr 2017, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
The increase came despite a plunge in imports from countries hit with anti-dumping duties in late Apr 2018.
The top source of imports remained Mexico at 105,478 mt in the first four months of 2018--34% of the total--down fractionally from Jan-Apr 2017.
Several countries have emerged as new sources of substantial import volumes. Import totals for the Jan-Apr 2018 and Jan-Apr 2017 periods, respectively, are:
* Oman, 28,473 mt, up from 665 mt
* Russia, 12,926 mt, up from none
* Belgium, 6,523 mt, up from 900 kg
* China, 5,479 mt, up from 34 mt
* Malaysia, 16,628 mt, up from 716 mt
* Turkey, 15,104 mt, up from 309 mt
* Thailand, 18,248 mt, up from 3,511
On the decrease side, imports from Brazil--one of five countries hit with anti-dumping duties--plunged to 5 mt in Jan-Apr 2018 from 24,373 mt in Jan-Apr 2017. Imports from Indonesia, also now subject to anti-dumping duties, totaled 101 mt in Jan-Apr 2018, down from 15,362 mt. -- Xavier A Cronin
