PET scrap exports down 57% in January-April
HOUSTON, June 8, 2018 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap totaled 44,358 metric tons in Jan-Apr valued at $18.1 million, down by 59,215 mt valued at $35.3 million, or 57%, from Jan-Apr 2017, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
The main reason was a drop in exports to China -- 3,284 mt from 51,861 mt -- and Hong Kong -- 9,316 mt from 34,053 mt -- in the respective 2018 and 2017 periods.
China's National Sword import ban on various scrap and rubbish was imposed last fall. China and Hong Kong together accounted for 85,914 mt or 83% of all US PET scrap exports in Jan-Apr 2017.
Meanwhile, exports in the first four months of 2018 surged to Turkey--5,468 mt from 308 mt--Thailand--4,191 mt from 28 mt--and Germany--1,050 mt from 7 mt --in the respective 2018 and 2017 periods. -- Xavier A Cronin
