US PET imports up 34% in Jan-May on increase from Oman, Malaysia
HOUSTON, July 6, 2018 (PCW) -- US imports of prime PET resin totaled 396,051 metric tons in Jan-May, up by 101,352 mt or 34.4% from Jan-May 2017, the latest US Commerce Department data show.
The increase came despite a plunge in imports from Brazil--one the of the top five sources of imports in 2017--to just 5 mt.
Imports from Brazil and four other countries--Indonesia, Taiwan, Pakistan and South Korea--were hit with US government anti-dumping duties in May 2018.
At the same time, imports from several countries have surged this year:
Imports from Oman totaled 36,550 mt in Jan-May, up from 780 mt in the year-earlier period; imports from Malaysia were 22,842 mt and 761 mt and from China were 9,993 mt and 54 mt, in the respective periods.
The top source of US imports this year through May was Mexico at 141,980 mt, 36% of the total. -- Xavier A Cronin
