US PET imports up 42% in 1H, valued at $622-mil

HOUSTON, August 6, 2018 (PCW) -- US imports of PET resin totaled 486,616 metric tons in the first six months of 2018, up by 143,157 mt or 42% from 1H 2017, the latest US Commerce Department data show.

1H 2018 imports were valued at $622.2 million, up from $370-million in 1H 2017.

Imports from several countries are up sharply this year (please see graph). For instance, there were no imports from Russia or South Africa in all of 2017 and in 1H 2018 they totaled 17,680 mt and 11,304 mt, respectively. Imports from Oman surged to 41,028 mt in 1H 2018 from 857 mt in 1H 2017.

The top source of imports in 1H was Mexico at 174,617 mt, up by 27,768 mt or 19% from 1H 2017. -- Xavier A Cronin
