Irving's Saint John refinery hit by explosion, fire
HOUSTON, October 8, 2018 (PCW) – Irving Oil's 320,000 b/d Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada refinery suffered an explosion and fire Monday shortly after 10 am EDT. Details as to the cause of the event were still emerging.
All employees and contractors at the refinery, Canada’s largest, are accounted for, Irving said. Several contractors are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries related to the incident, it said. The company did not provide any details or description of the incident, and there was no update on the fire or refinery operations.
Irving was carrying out maintenance on its 150,000 b/d crude unit and a 74,000 b/d gasoline-making unit as of Sep 20.
In July, the refinery exported 1.46 million barrels of diesel, 3.1 million barrels of gasoline, 208,000 barrels of propylene, 85,000 barrels of residual fuel and 730,000 barrels of asphalt, almost all to the USAC, per the US Energy Information Administration. – Tom Sosnowski
