Lightning struck Dow's Freeport TX-8 unit Thursday; rates briefly reduced

HOUSTON, December 28, 2018 (PCW) -- A 'high-intensity lightning strike' Thursday morning caused Dow's TX-8 olefins unit at Freeport, TX, to flare, according to a TCEQ filing made by the company on Friday.

The plant, which has an ethylene capacity of 2.95 billion lbs/yr, was flaring as a result and the unit's rates were reduced to minimize the flare. The equipment was then inspected for damage and subsequently restarted.
