US PET scrap exports in January down 40%, valued at $4.6 million

HOUSTON, March 11, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of scrap PET fell by 40% in January from January 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Exports were 13,179 metric tons in January, down from 21,970 MT a year earlier. PET is one of five plastic scrap categories tracked by USA Trade Online, a unit of the US Census Bureau.

The value of PET scrap exports in January was $4.6 million, down from $8.2 million a year earlier.

A plunge in exports to Southeast Asia, including China, the largest destination for US PET scrap exports, was the main reason for the drop. At the same time, exports to Malaysia rose by 612% to1,146 MT, and from zero to 60 MT to Indonesia. -- Xavier A. Cronin
