US PET imports from Taiwan, S Korea, UAE, Russia surged in December

HOUSTON, March 2, 2016 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging grade PET in December 2015 surged from several countries, the latest USA Trade Online data show. US packaging grade imports in 2015 from all countries totaled 593,424 MT valued at $695.5 million.

Imports from Taiwan totaled 6,163 metric tons in December 2015, up 4,483 MT or by 266% from December 2014. Other countries with December 2015 import totals and December 2014 comparison:

The increased volume compensated in some degree for an absence of any imports in December 2015 from China and India, two major suppliers. This was likely the result of antidumping and countervailing duties imposed on PET imports from China and India by the US government last year. This occurred after US PET producers filed a complaint arguing that the imports in 2014 had been sold at an unfair value, and the production and/or marketing of them had been subsidized by the countries’ governments. -- Xavier A.
