US PET imports down 17.5% in January; zero from China and India
HOUSTON, March 7, 2016 (PCW) -- US packaging grade PET imports in January totaled 50,330 metric tons, down 17.5% from January 2015, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
There were no imports in January from China, compared to 6,881 MT in January 2015, or India, at 2,582 MT a year earlier.
Imports from Canada in January were 8,457 MT, down from 12,836 MT in January 2015. Imports from Oman were just 76 MT, down 65,718% from 49,946 MT a year earlier.
Canada, China, India and Oman were hit last October with preliminary antidumping duties imposed by the US government. A final determination on the duties was made Friday with details to be released later today, a US Commerce Department official told PCW.
PET imports from Mexico, the largest source of US packaging grade PET imports were 16,299 MT in January, down from 17,892 MT a year earlier.
US packaging grade PET imports totaled 593,424 MT in 2015, valued at $695.5 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
