US PET scrap exports to China down 62% in January from year earlier

HOUSTON, March 9, 2016 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap to China in January totaled 5,498 metric tons, down 62% from the January 2015 total of 14,3362 metric tons, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

The lower exports follow a trend that started last year: US PET scrap exports in 2015 totaled 143,236 MT (valued at $50.9 million), down 40% from 2014. US PET scrap exports include bales, preforms and other post industrial and post consumer PET scrap.

China is the major destination of all US plastic scrap exports. The five plastic scrap categories tracked by USA Trade Online, a unit of the US Census Bureau, are PE, PS, PVC, PET and 'other,' which includes a non-segregated mix of various plastic scrap.

All US plastic scrap exports in January were 121,093 MT, down 3.8% from January 2015. All US plastics scrap exports for 2015 totaled 2,058,000 MT valued at $817.8 million. --Xavier A. Cronin
