Williams’ Geismar olefins unit shut down after power outage

HOUSTON, March 16, 2017 (PCW) – Williams’ 2.06 billion lbs/yr Geismar olefins unit shut down late Sunday after a site-wide power outage.

Repairs to the plant are ongoing; it is expected to return to service in about three weeks.

The plant went down for planned maintenance in late November and was restarted in mid-December. It was then running at reduced rates since January and ramped up to full capacity in February.

The plant constitutes 3.25% of US ethylene production capacity and consumes 55,000 b/d of ethane.

The unit is up for sale. Williams in its recent earnings call said it expects final bids to be in this month. -- Samantha Hartke
