Unsorted plastic scrap exports rise on surge to China, Vietnam

HOUSTON, March 24, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of unsorted plastic scrap totaled 53,004 metric tons in January, up 6,562 mt, or 14%, from January 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Unsorted plastic scrap is one of five plastic scrap categories tracked by the US government for import and export. The others are PVC, PS, PE and PET.

Unsorted exports to China and Vietnam were up sharply while imports to Hong Kong, the top destination, were steady. Exports to China totaled 17,693 mt in January, up 8,739 mt, or 98%; exports to Vietnam totaled 2,877 mt, up 2,421 mt, or 531%, from January 2016. Exports to Hong Kong in January were 20,623 mt, up fractionally from a year earlier.

No unsorted plastic scrap was exported from the US to Spain in January 2016; a year later they totaled 106 mt. --  Xavier A. Cronin
