Total, Borealis, NOVA form joint venture; to build cracker, PE plant in Texas
HOUSTON, March 27, 2017 (PCW) – Total, NOVA Chemicals and Borealis on Monday announced they would form a joint venture that would, among others, build a new ethane steam cracker and polyethylene unit on the US Gulf Coast.
The partnership includes a new 2.2 billion lbs/yr ethane steam cracker in Port Arthur, a new 1.375 billion lbs/yr Borstar polyethylene plant at Bayport and also includes Total’s existing 880 million lbs/yr PE plant at Bayport.
Total will hold a 50% interest in the new JV, which is expected to be established later this year. The final investment decision on the new PE plant will be made at the same time.
The $1.7 billion new cracker is scheduled to start up in 2020 and will be built alongside Total’s Port Arthur refinery and Total/BASF existing steam cracker. -- Samantha Hartke
