PET imports up 14.5% in February; Canada down 48%
HOUSTON, April 11, 2016 (PCW) -- US imports of packaging-grade PET--a $695 million a year business--totaled 52,348 metric tons in February, up 14.5% from a year earlier, the latest USA Trade Online data show.
At the same time, imports from Canada, the second largest source in 2015, were down 48% at 9,095 MT. Canada, India, Oman and China were hit last year with antidumping duties imposed by the US government.
Making up for a decline in imports from these four countries was a surge in imports from Thailand -- 5,698 MT in February compared with 118 kilograms a year earlier -- and an increase from Mexico. Mexico remains the largest source of these imports. Imports in February came from 19 countries.
Total US packaging-grade PET imports in 2015 were 593,424 MT valued at $695.6 million, compared to 587,159 MT valued at $824.3 million in 2014. -- Xavier A. Cronin
