Eastman to begin planned turnaround at Longview olefins unit Sunday
HOUSTON, April 15, 2016 (PCW) –- Eastman’s HCC-3 olefins unit at Longview, Texas, is on track to begin a planned turnaround on Sunday. The unit, one of three olefins plants at the site, has an ethylene capacity of 310 million pounds per year, or about 850,000 pounds per day. It is one of the smaller units in the US and represents about 0.5% of US capacity.
The Eastman outage will bring maximum operating rates in Texas to 86-87%, their lowest level since January 2015. In addition to the turnaround at Longview, Chevron Phillips’ Sweeny 24 unit, Equistar’s Corpus Christi olefins plant and Ineos’ Chocolate Bayou Olefins 1 unit remain shut for planned maintenance.
Despite the outages, spot ethylene continued to trade lower Friday morning, with two April deals done at 24.5 cpp. April ethylene began the week trading at 27 cpp and has steadily traded lower each day. -- Kathy Hall
