Shell to begin construction on Pennsylvania cracker later this year
HOUSTON, April 6, 2017 (PCW) – Shell on Thursday said it would begin construction on its petrochemicals project in Monaca, Pennsylvania, later this year.
The facility includes a 3.3 billion lbs/yr ethane cracker and 3.5 billion lb/syr of polyethylene capacity. The cracker is expected to consume some 90,000-92,000 b/d of ethane, according to PetroChem Wire estimates. It will source its feedstock from the Marcellus and Utica production basins.
Commercial production is expected in early 2021.
The construction work that has taken place so far has included the laying of concrete to complete the foundations, which began in March, and the completion of two large river docks to receive equipment by barge during construction, which should reduce road traffic. -- Samantha Hartke
