Plastic scrap exports, valued at $733-mil in 2016, up in February

HOUSTON, April 13, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of plastic scrap totaled 170,172 metric tons in February, up 28,621 mt, or 20%, from February 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Exports were higher in four of the five plastic scrap categories tracked by USA Trade Online, a unit of the US Census Bureau. Exports were down 2% in the largest category, unsorted plastic scrap, at 55,894 mt in February 2017 from 57,049 mt a year earlier.

PE scrap exports were 67,076 mt in February, up 16,583 mt, or 33%, from a year earlier. PS scrap exports were 4,319 mt, up 2,324 mt, or 116%. PET scrap exports totaled 24,495 mt, up 10.524 mt, or 75%, with PVC scrap's February total at 18,388 mt, up 345 mt, or 2%, from a year earlier.

China and Hong Kong remained major destinations for these exports. For example, PE scrap exports to China and Hong Kong combined in February 2017 totaled 50,224 mt, 75% of the total.

Full-year 2016 plastic scrap exports totaled 1,944,271 mt valued at $733.8 million. Of this, 236,188 mt was PET scrap, valued at $87.4 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
