Petchems stocks mostly lower again despite crude gains: PCW index
HOUSTON, May 20, 2016 (PCW) -– Petchems companies’ stocks were mostly lower once again during the week, despite crude gains.
For the fourth consecutive week, the midstream segment bucked the overall trend with its average stock price up 94 cents, or 3.22%, to $30.04/share, largely thanks to continued strong gains in NGL prices. Targa took the lion’s share with its stock up 4.57% during the week as several hedge funds increased their positions in the company, prompting some analysts to either upgrade or reiterate their ‘Buy’ rating.
The vinyls group took the biggest hit with its average stock price falling 82 cents, or 2.25%, to $35.79/share. Olin led the pack with its stock price down 4.6% week-on-week amid light activity.
The olefins/polyolefins group was next with its average stock price declining 39 cents, or 0.66%, to $59.15/share. A strong 13.06% rebound in Williams’ stock (even as lawsuits against its potential buyer Energy Transfer mounted) was stymied by other companies’ in the segment ultimately charting lower.
Finally, the aromatics/refinery sector saw its average stock price shed 16 cents, or 0.28%, to $57.96/share. Gains in many companies in the group were dashed by Alon’s 8.5% drop in its stock price on the week. The move came as news broke that a company adviser had offloaded a significant amount of the company’ stock this week, according to SEC filings. -- Samantha Hartke
