1Q PET scrap exports, worth $87 mil in 2016, surge to China, Vietnam

HOUSTON, May 5, 2017 (PCW) -- US exports of PET scrap totaled 81,339 metric tons, valued at $28 million, in the first three months of 2017, up 36,984 mt, or 83%, from 1Q 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Exports to China, the top destination, totaled 40,000 mt in 1Q, up 20,323 mt, or 103%, from 1Q 2016; to Hong Kong, exports were 29,751 mt, up 11,140 mt, or 60%; and to Vietnam, PET scrap exports totaled 3,994 mt, up 3,073 mt, or 334%, from Q1 2016.

Exports to the United Arab Emirates totaled 31 mt in 1Q, up from 962 kg in 1Q 2016, and 107 mt to the Philippines, down from 247 mt in 1Q 2016. 

Exports include PET bales, lump and chunk -- including clear klunkers and other post-industrial forms -- and other PET scrap.

Full-year 2016 US PET scrap exports totaled 252,424 mt valued at $87.4 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
