PET resin imports up 7% in 1Q; Mexico, Taiwan top sources
HOUSTON, May 5, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET resin with an IV of 78 ml/gram or higher totaled 176,910 metric tons, valued at $187.2 million, in the first three months of 2017, up 11,679 mt, or 7%, from 1Q 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show. Q1 2016 imports were valued at $165.7 million.
Mexico and Taiwan remained the top sources of PET resin imports, at 80,000 mt and 27,957 mt, respectively, up 31% and 17%, from 1Q 2016.
Imports from Ecuador surged in 1Q 2017 to 1,522 mt, up 1,098 mt or 252% from 1Q 2016. Imports from the number three source in volume, Brazil, totaled 19,284 mt in 1Q, up 3,576 mt, or 23%. Imports from Canada fell in 1Q 2017 by 41% to 11,112 mt while they rose to 647 mt from 531 mt from Oman; imports from Oman and Canada were hit with anti-dumping duties in 2015.
Lithuania got on the PET resin import map posting 16 mt in Q1, up from none in 1Q 2016. -- Xavier A. Cronin
