PET scrap imports climb 17% on surge from Mexico

HOUSTON, May 15, 2017 (PCW) -- US imports of PET scrap totaled 28,481 metric tons in 1Q, up 4,107 mt, or 17%, from 1Q 2016, the latest USA Trade Online data show.

Imports from the top source, Mexico, surged to 7,201 mt in 1Q, 25% of the total and up 1,299 mt, or 25%, from 1Q 2016. Imports from Canada, the number two source, totaled 5,800 mt in 1Q, up 214 mt, or 4%, from 1Q 2016.

Imports in the first quarter came from 30 countries, including the Cayman Islands, with 1Q imports at 5 mt, down from 10 mt in 1Q 2016.

Full year 2016 imports totaled 117,162 mt valued at $63.5 million, up 15% from 2015's imports which were valued at $55.5 million. -- Xavier A. Cronin
